Immunocal is a specially fromulated whey protien isolate that has been clinically shown to raise glutathione levels in the maintenance and enhancement of the human immune response system. It was developed in Monteal at the Teaching Hospital of McGill University, the Montreal General Hospital by a team of researchers headed by Gustavo Bounous, MD. The clinical testing of Immunocal is ongoing, with a number of prtocols having been done in the fields of AIDS, cancer, cystic fibrosis, asthma, autism and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Glutathione is the bodies master anti-oxident, detoxifier and immune response builder. Oxiradicals, which are created as a result of normal cell metabolism, cause cell damage if they are left unchecked. For this reason, the body is equipped with a variety of antioxidants including glutathione. Other well known antioxidents are vitamin C and E, both of which are kept in a functional state by the actions of glutathione. The presence of glutathione is required to maintain the normal functioning of the immune system in at least two ways. It is known to play critical role in the multiplication of lymphocytes, the cells that mediate specific immunity and T-cells which occur in the development of an immune response. Suppliments with detoxifying properties become necessary as our environment becomes increasingly polluted. Our food and water sourses are contaminated with chemicals. One of our main defenses against pollutants is glutathione, which is present in the liver in high concentrations. Glutathione acts as a detoxifying agent by combining with undesirable substances and ridding the body of them through urine and bile. There are at least one dozen known cancer producing chemicals present in the environment that are detoxified by glutathione.
It is well documented that AIDS patients, who are by definition immune deficient, with wasting syndrome have lower tissue glutathione concentrations especially in the T lymphocytes. Recent studies showed that survival time was improved in AIDS patients who maintained higher glutathione levels in their CD4 T-cells than those with low levels.
Glutathione staus is highly relevant in combating cancer. Glutathione detoxifies carcinogens and maintains effective immune function which can promote anti-tumor activity in existing tumors as well as discourage the development of new ones.
Immunocal is listed in the PDR, the Physcians Desk Reference, under nutriceuticals. This book is used by doctors and lists all pharmiceuticals, their uses and contraindications. The only contraindication in using Immunocal, the only reason why someone shouldn't take it, is if they are on immunosuppresent drug therapy. In other words, their doctors want them to have a weak immune system. This is necessary for organ transplant patients.
